February 10, 2012 @ Roseland Ballroom, New York, NY SOLD OUT

OK, here we go again.  But this time, I think this is the coolest thing to happen to Guns N’ Roses fans since the Hammerstein Ballroom shows in 2006.  A fucking club tour!  WHAT A GREAT FUCKING IDEA!  LEt’s hope they have fun, and that concert goers will have a blast!

I won’t be there…but I will do the updates tomorrow night.  You guys won’t miss a picture, a video, and the set list!

The Roseland Ballroom (also referred to as Roseland Dance City) is a multi-purpose hall, in a converted ice skating rink, with a colorful ballroom dancing pedigree, in New York City‘s theatre district, on West 52nd Street.

The venue, according to its website, can accommodate 3,200 standing (with an additional 300 upstairs), 2,500 for a dance party, between 1,500 and 1,800 in theatre style, and 800-1,000 for a sit-down dinner.

The quirky venue has hosted everything, from a Hillary Clinton birthday party, to annual gay circuit parties, to movie premieres, to musical performances from all genres.

The rear of the venue faces West 53rd Street and the Ed Sullivan Theater. It is seen virtually every time that comedian David Letterman has outside antics during taping of the Late Show with David Letterman beside his theater (prompting various attempts to paint the industrial-looking wall to make it look better on national television).

51st Street location History

Roseland was founded initially in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1917 by Louis Brecker with financing by Frank Yuengling of the D. G. Yuengling & Son beer family.

In 1919, they moved the venue to 1658 Broadway at 51st Street in New York. It was a “whites only” dance club called the “home of refined dancing”, famed for the big band groups that played there, starting with Sam Lanin and his Ipana Troubadours. Couples danced the jitterbugLindy Hop, andCharleston under the Roseland’s famed star-studded ceiling.

The Fletcher Henderson Band played at the Roseland throughout the 1920 and 1930′s. Orchestras that played the venue included Vincent LopezHarry JamesLouis ArmstrongTommy Dorsey, and Glenn Miller. The appearance by Count Basie was a turning point in his career and a break though in the all-white atmosphere of the club. One of his songs was to be the “Roseland Shuffle”.

Brecker popularized marathon dancing until it was banned, staged female prizefights, yo-yo exhibitions, sneezing contests, and dozens of highly publicized jazz weddings with couples who met at the club.

As the club grew older, Brecker attempted to formalize the dancing more by having hostesses dance for 11¢ a dance or $1.50 a half-hour with tuxedoed bouncers (politely known as “housemen”) keeping order. It was to work its way into stories by Ring LardnerSherwood AndersonF. Scott Fitzgerald, and John O’Hara.

Current 52nd Street location

The original New York Roseland was torn down in 1956 and it moved to its new venue on West 52nd, a building that Brecker earlier had converted from an ice-skating rink to a roller-skating rink. It had been built in 1922 at a cost of $800,000 by the Iceland ice-skating franchise. A thousand skaters showed up on opening night at the 80-by-200-foot rink on November 29, 1922. Iceland went bankrupt in 1932 and the rink opened as the Gay Blades Ice Rink. Brecker took it over in the 1950s and converted it to roller-skating.

Time magazine described the new Roseland’s opening interior as a “purple-and-cerise tentlike décor that creates a definite harem effect.”[2] Brecker attempted to maintain its ballroom dancing style, banning rock and roll and disco. In 1974 Brecker told The New York Times, “Cheek-to-cheek dancing, that’s what this place is all about.”

Brecker sold the building in 1981. Under the new owners the Roseland began regularly scheduled “disco nights”, which gave rise to a period when it was considered a dangerous venue and neighborhood menace.

In July 1978, a 19 year old British exchange student was drugged and kidnapped from the ballroom by a group affiliated to the Red Army Faction. She was subsequently found in wasteland murdered 5 days later, and the killers never found.

In 1984, a teenager was shot to death on the dance floor.

In 1990, after Utah tourist Brian Watkins was killed in the subway, four of the eight suspects (members of the FTS gang) were found partying at Roseland. As a result, Roseland discontinued the “disco nights”.

Its low-rise three-story structure on top of the quarter-acre dance floor in the middle of midtown Manhattan has stirred concerns over its being torn down for redevelopment. In 1996, a new owner, Laurence Ginsberg, filed plans to tear down the venue and replace it with a 42-story, 459-unit apartment building. A spokesman for Ginsberg said the filing was to “beat a deadline for new, more stringent earthquake codes, which went into effect earlier” in 1996. The interior space has been subsequently renovated.

On March 8, 2011, at around 10:30 p.m., a 2-alarm fire in the mezzanine section was reported. The extent of the damage, and cause of the fire is not yet known. There was no event at the time of the fire’s breakout.

Fuck!! The NY shows were insane!! Love the free form laid back vibe n’ both were completely different from r view. The fans were AMAZING!! John (Varvatos) was really great! And to keep CBGB’s rockin’?! Badass!! Goin’ into Rose Bar was rough on some. Lotta best left memories from the old hotel. The gig helped w/some o’ those. Felt really good on stage. (We actually “LIKE” playing together n’ I absolutely agree some things should b a lot less complicated than others made them in the past that’s why we’re together n’ other’s by their own accord ain’t here.) We all had a great time, it was a madhouse!! Thanks to everyone who came out n’ those who helped put ‘em 2gether. Good to have a short break n’ gear up 4 South America. I LOVE NY!!

On another note Guns is now managed by Doc McGhee n’ we’re off to a fun start. Big welcomes! It’s nice to have the support!!

Elsewhere:

Canadian tour n’ Slash banned clothing nonsense: which I addressed live as soon as it happened but hey fake allegations from unreliable sources bein’ negative n’ all especially w/us n’ these issues got more weight to n’ 4 aholes. Fabricated from a 2001 bs RS piece from Rock N’ Rio. Bottom line Never happened, end of story. Fuck TMZ, ContactMusic, Spinner (I got ur attitude.)

Goin’ on late at Rose Bar nonsense: Nope, Nopity, Nope!! 1:30am on time! U got played!! We were asked to do a show for fans n’ friends etc. We were told when to arrive n’ when to play between 1 an 2am which we did exactly. We didn’t perform for the press or their deadlines other than that they were there. We do our best provided we r treated in the same manner to be polite n’ cordial. The past can kiss ur ass, not gonna happen here. Under other circumstances n’ advance arrangements things may have been or be different, w/these shows they weren’t.

Goin’ on “hours” late in Toronto nonsense: Based on set change etc. went on 1 hour 8mins late w/circumstances beyond r control n’ last minute physical injuries from earlier performances (which took that hour to find ways to deal with) n’ could have cancelled the performance not “hrs”. Apologies were made. If u have a problem w/any of that or especially if u weren’t there fuck off.

Not doin’ surprise shows for the hardcore fans nonsense: Sorry some feel that way. Saw a lot at both gigs singin’ every word in every song. We made efforts to get several if not all fans who contacted us n’ were in town into these gigs. We also didn’t know most of the guests as we don’t live here n’ for that matter what makes some internet fan more hardcore than whoever else anyway, oh that’s rt…nothing!! Some just like 2 bitch 2 bitch. So if ur complainin’ n’ u drink beer, today I recommend a Lucky or perhaps a Red Stripe…if ur still peeved…again, fuck off.

I sweat nonsense: On ur mama! Really? That’s what u write about? No shit! I work hard, it’s good for ya n’ I smell better than u!!

Takin’ shots at Slash n’ reunions over Haiti nonsense: Never happened. Wasn’t aware of any comments from the old lineup.

So in closing…Fuck the LA Times, TMZ, Contact Music n’ Spinner. I don’t need “forgiven” for alleged n’ fabricated nonsense. I’ve no respect for mean spirited aholes gettin’ paid talkin’ shit at other’s expense or irresponsible biased partisan politics wanna be journalism by dated hacks. Go on! Back ur boy! But when he says he never killed no one that ain’t exactly true. Yeah, that’s right, stone cold. So if we happen to play your neighborhood or for that matter anywhere at anytime regardless of the circumstances, presales, public sales, give aways, even free shows consider yourself uninvited. It’s a free country but you’re formally n’ publicly not welcome.

Bottom line is we ain’t makin’ efforts to rain on ur parade why piss on or take cheap shots at r’s. Oh that’s rt…how u make ur livin’s all that counts not others, whatever. U ain’t above anyone regardless of who or what corporation u work for n’ unfortunately most of u’ll get to learn that the hard way.

Everyone else…

Thanks for ALL the positive comments, press n’ tearin’ it up w/us!! It was absolutely fucking AMAZING!! Can’t wait to see u out there n’ we absolutely appreciate your support!!

Thanks again 2 everyone involved n’ everyone that was rockin’ out 4 makin’ everything SO fucking great!!

What an experience!!

Peace!!

Correction: In rereading I realized I addressed the clothing nonsense as soon as I was made aware not when it 1st happened, my bad. I tend to avoid media n’ the net when touring so as not to have whatever negative nonsense or those tryin’ 2 stir trouble interfere w/either the show or time needed elsewhere in prep as well as other GNR business. Too much goin’ on to b throwin’ sand in some idiot’s sandbox. Also my comments aren’t based on these relatively minor issues they go a fair way back w/each of those mentioned n’ unfortunately several others. We aren’t lookin’ 4 free rides or handouts, give those to those u been but if ya wanna play nice we can too in fact we’d love to. Can’t say we didn’t make the effort. Peace!!

Talking about Sebastian Bach….

The New York post had a story about Sebastian Bach jumping on a guy who had a jackknife the other night at the Rose Bar.  Here is the story:

Knife menace at Guns & Roses show

Chaos was narrowly averted at an intimate Guns N’ Roses concert when a man with a knife was tackled by ex-Skid Row frontman Sebastian Bach.

The mystery man casually pulled out what appeared to be a switchblade knife as he walked into the packed and uber-exclusive “Nur Khan‘s Rose Bar Sessions” at the Gramercy Park Hotel on Sunday.

FULL FASHION WEEK COVERAGE

But Bach, who was standing near the door, immediately got the stranger thrown out of the bash, which was attended by a host of stars including Mickey Rourke.

A witness reports, “The man walked in while Guns N’ Roses was onstage and pulled out a knife and flicked the blade out. Sebastian, who was standing on a banquette said: ‘Nobody is getting anywhere near my man Axl Rose with a knife,’ and went after him. Security then immediately threw him out. The man appeared to be drunk. It was dealt with so quickly that none of the other guests or the band were aware of it.”

The private Valentine’s Day concert was the hottest ticket in town, with a handpicked crowd including the Strokes’ Fabrizio Moretti and Albert Hammond Jr., Ryan Phillippe, Zoe Kravitz, Josh Lucas, Yigal Azrouel and Sophia Bush, who all packed into the Rose Bar for the DeLeon Tequila-sponsored first of Khan’s series of intimate concerts.

Guns N’ Roses played for two hours for 150 guests, finishing up at 3 a.m. before moving the party upstairs with a group of model and rocker friends until 6 a.m.

When earlier asked by The Post’s Brian Niemietz if long metal hair will come back in fashion, Bach said, “If it does, people better start now because it takes seven [bleep]ing years to get it this length.” Flaunting his golden locks, Bach added, “And this isn’t some Jessica [bleep]ing Simpson hair extensions — this is the real deal.” A rep for the Rose Bar declined to comment.
