Februry 15th, 2012 New York, NY @ The Ritz (Webster Hall) SOLD OUT

Another sold out show tonight.  By the way…who taught they wouldn’t sold out all these amazing New York club shows hey????  Have fun people!

Webster Hall is a nightclub located at 125 East 11th Street, between Third and Fourth Avenues, near Astor Place, in ManhattanNew York City. Built in 1886, its current incarnation was opened by the Ballinger Brothers in 1992. It serves as a nightclub, concert venue, corporate events center, and recording venue, and has a capacity of 2,500 people—including the club; 1,400 for the main stage.

On March 18, 2008, after a landmarks proposal was submitted by the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation, the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission voted to designate Webster Hall and its Annex a New York City landmark.

1886–1970s

History

Webster Hall was built in 1886 by architect Charles Rentz in the Queen Anne style and topped with an elaborate mansard roof. Six years later in 1892, Rentz was hired to design an addition to the building, occupying the site of 125 East 11th Street and designed in a Renaissance Revival style using the same materials as the original building. Throughout the early twentieth century the building was plagued by fires, which occurred in 1902, 1911, 1930, 1938, and 1949. The original mansard roof was likely lost in one these fires.

Webster Hall became the country’s first modern nightclub. It was a place where one could witness figures such as Emma Goldman, the outspoken exponent of Anarchism, herald the cause of free love and birth control on one night and, on the next night, see the refined atmosphere and grace of a society function celebrating New York’s elite. Margaret Sanger led strikers to the building in 1912. Other patrons from the club’s early years include painters Marcel Duchamp and Joseph Stella.

During Prohibition, the theme of the balls held within the hall moved from the social and political trends to the hedonistic attitude of the speakeasy. Local politicians and police were said to turn a blind eye to the activities, and it was rumored that the venue was owned by the mobster Al Capone. The repeal of Prohibition was the reason for one of Webster Hall’s biggest celebrations, “The Return of John Barleycorn.”

In the 1950s, Webster Hall began featuring concerts from a diverse group of artists. Latin performers, such as Tito Puente and Tito Rodriguez played at the club. So, too, did folk artists Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie. Then RCA Recordsrecognized the acoustical integrity of the building and converted it into their East Coast recording venue, Webster Hall Studios. Carol Channing recorded Hello, Dolly! there, Harold Prince recorded Fiddler on the Roof, and artists such as Julie AndrewsHarry BelafonteTony BennettRay CharlesPerry ComoSergio FranchiPeter NeroElvis Presley, and Frank Sinatra all recorded in the studio.

On February 2, 1962 Bob Dylan was recorded playing harmonica on the title track of Harry Belafonte’s Midnight Special album, marking Dylan’s recording debut. The Music Theatre of Lincoln Center albums of Broadway shows recorded between 1964 and 1969 were all made at Webster Hall, but without a live audience, and in 1966, the recording of Handel’s Giulio Cesare starring Norman Treigle and Beverly Sills was recorded at the Hall for RCA.

In 1970, Unity Gallega, also known as Casa Galicia of New York, purchased the site and remains the current owner of the property. Unity Gallega/Casa Galicia is a cultural organization representing people from Galicia, Spain in promoting and preserving their cultural ties.

1980–present

On May 1, 1980, The Ritz opened by Jerry Brandt in the Webster Hall building as a showcase venue for emerging rock acts. Tina TurnerEric ClaptonThe PretendersPrinceMetallicaSting,AerosmithU2Book of LoveCro-MagsKISSB.B. King, and Guns N’ Roses all performed on what was routinely called, “the best stage in New York City. The Ritz was the first nightclub to feature a video component, which soon set a trend.

When the Ritz relocated in 1989, it gave Webster Hall the opportunity to be reborn. In 1992, the Ballinger Brothers unveiled the restored Webster Hall, featuring state of the art audio, video, and lighting technology with the original color scheme recreated. The venue hosted two or three different genres of music at once on weekend evenings, providing rave/house music in their large dance room and rock in the upstairs billiard area. A facility capable of catering to groups of 100 to 2,000, MadonnaMick Jagger and Bill Clinton have had events there, as has the World Wrestling Federation TNA Wrestling and the taping of Fuji Television Network‘s Iron Chef ”New York Special” between Bobby Flay and Masaharu Morimoto. The venue offers five different rooms.

Canopy and lighting sconce over side door

In addition to its weekly club nights, Webster Hall is one of the city’s premiere live music venues. It is the exclusive live music venue for AOL’s New York Broadband Rocks series. On May 11, 2007Linkin Park filmed their Minutes to Midnight Promo Concert, which was then released into theatres. The club recently entered into a partnership to present The Bowery Ballroom Presents at Webster Hall concert series, which has already brought such acts as Sonic YouthInfected MushroomThe HivesJohn MayerJohn Butler and Modest Mouse to the mainstage. In October 2008, Webster Hall opened its newest room “The Studio at Webster Hall”, a 300 capacity performance space.

As real estate development pressure grew exponentially in the East Village during the 2000s, the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation saw the need to protect the scale and character of many of the East Village’s unique historic structures. In the summer of 2007, GVSHP supplied the Landmarks Preservation Commission with extensive research on the history of Webster Hall, and urged the LPC to landmark the site. Shortly thereafter the LPC commissioners voted to consider the building for landmark designation and in spring 2008 the building was officially designated a New York City landmark, recognizing its significant role in the cultural development of the Village.

February 10, 2012 @ Roseland Ballroom, New York, NY SOLD OUT

OK, here we go again.  But this time, I think this is the coolest thing to happen to Guns N’ Roses fans since the Hammerstein Ballroom shows in 2006.  A fucking club tour!  WHAT A GREAT FUCKING IDEA!  LEt’s hope they have fun, and that concert goers will have a blast!

I won’t be there…but I will do the updates tomorrow night.  You guys won’t miss a picture, a video, and the set list!

The Roseland Ballroom (also referred to as Roseland Dance City) is a multi-purpose hall, in a converted ice skating rink, with a colorful ballroom dancing pedigree, in New York City‘s theatre district, on West 52nd Street.

The venue, according to its website, can accommodate 3,200 standing (with an additional 300 upstairs), 2,500 for a dance party, between 1,500 and 1,800 in theatre style, and 800-1,000 for a sit-down dinner.

The quirky venue has hosted everything, from a Hillary Clinton birthday party, to annual gay circuit parties, to movie premieres, to musical performances from all genres.

The rear of the venue faces West 53rd Street and the Ed Sullivan Theater. It is seen virtually every time that comedian David Letterman has outside antics during taping of the Late Show with David Letterman beside his theater (prompting various attempts to paint the industrial-looking wall to make it look better on national television).

51st Street location History

Roseland was founded initially in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1917 by Louis Brecker with financing by Frank Yuengling of the D. G. Yuengling & Son beer family.

In 1919, they moved the venue to 1658 Broadway at 51st Street in New York. It was a “whites only” dance club called the “home of refined dancing”, famed for the big band groups that played there, starting with Sam Lanin and his Ipana Troubadours. Couples danced the jitterbugLindy Hop, andCharleston under the Roseland’s famed star-studded ceiling.

The Fletcher Henderson Band played at the Roseland throughout the 1920 and 1930′s. Orchestras that played the venue included Vincent LopezHarry JamesLouis ArmstrongTommy Dorsey, and Glenn Miller. The appearance by Count Basie was a turning point in his career and a break though in the all-white atmosphere of the club. One of his songs was to be the “Roseland Shuffle”.

Brecker popularized marathon dancing until it was banned, staged female prizefights, yo-yo exhibitions, sneezing contests, and dozens of highly publicized jazz weddings with couples who met at the club.

As the club grew older, Brecker attempted to formalize the dancing more by having hostesses dance for 11¢ a dance or $1.50 a half-hour with tuxedoed bouncers (politely known as “housemen”) keeping order. It was to work its way into stories by Ring LardnerSherwood AndersonF. Scott Fitzgerald, and John O’Hara.

Current 52nd Street location

The original New York Roseland was torn down in 1956 and it moved to its new venue on West 52nd, a building that Brecker earlier had converted from an ice-skating rink to a roller-skating rink. It had been built in 1922 at a cost of $800,000 by the Iceland ice-skating franchise. A thousand skaters showed up on opening night at the 80-by-200-foot rink on November 29, 1922. Iceland went bankrupt in 1932 and the rink opened as the Gay Blades Ice Rink. Brecker took it over in the 1950s and converted it to roller-skating.

Time magazine described the new Roseland’s opening interior as a “purple-and-cerise tentlike décor that creates a definite harem effect.”[2] Brecker attempted to maintain its ballroom dancing style, banning rock and roll and disco. In 1974 Brecker told The New York Times, “Cheek-to-cheek dancing, that’s what this place is all about.”

Brecker sold the building in 1981. Under the new owners the Roseland began regularly scheduled “disco nights”, which gave rise to a period when it was considered a dangerous venue and neighborhood menace.

In July 1978, a 19 year old British exchange student was drugged and kidnapped from the ballroom by a group affiliated to the Red Army Faction. She was subsequently found in wasteland murdered 5 days later, and the killers never found.

In 1984, a teenager was shot to death on the dance floor.

In 1990, after Utah tourist Brian Watkins was killed in the subway, four of the eight suspects (members of the FTS gang) were found partying at Roseland. As a result, Roseland discontinued the “disco nights”.

Its low-rise three-story structure on top of the quarter-acre dance floor in the middle of midtown Manhattan has stirred concerns over its being torn down for redevelopment. In 1996, a new owner, Laurence Ginsberg, filed plans to tear down the venue and replace it with a 42-story, 459-unit apartment building. A spokesman for Ginsberg said the filing was to “beat a deadline for new, more stringent earthquake codes, which went into effect earlier” in 1996. The interior space has been subsequently renovated.

On March 8, 2011, at around 10:30 p.m., a 2-alarm fire in the mezzanine section was reported. The extent of the damage, and cause of the fire is not yet known. There was no event at the time of the fire’s breakout.

Happy birthday Axl!
