September 30th, 2010 Antwerpen, Belgium @ Sportpaleis

Another super show coming up tomorrow night in Belgium!

Sportpaleis Antwerp (Sports Palace Antwerp) is an arena in Antwerp, Belgium. It is a multipurpose hall where various events such as concerts, sporting events, festivals and fairs are organized. The building is located in the district Merksem , next to the Antwerp ring road. The arena was originally built for sports, especially track cycling, but these sport events generally don’t take place there anymore, with the exception being the Diamond Games (indoor tennis tournament).

The Arena is now best known for performances by major Dutch-speaking artists like Clouseau, Marco Borsato and Milk Inc., but also for concerts by major international artists such as Pink Floyd, Pearl Jam, Black Eyed Peas, et cetera (see the section ‘Trivia’). Other well-known events in the Sports Palace include the Diamond Games, Nekka Eight and ‘Pop Poll De Luxe’, an event organised by the magazine Humo. Formerly, the Sportpaleis also hosted the ECC tennis tournament , a tennis tournament for men. Today, each February, the Proximus Diamond Games are organised at the site, a tennis tournament for women.

Adjacent to the Sportpaleis is the Lotto Arena, an event hall that can accommodate about 5000 spectators. The hall is in use since March 2006 and complements the main building of the Sportpaleis. Among other things, it is used by basketball team Antwerp Giants, who play their home games there.

History

Around 1930, many people were dreaming of an indoor cycling track near the city of Antwerp. At that time, it would be the largest indoor arena in Europe. Building started on January 11, 1932. The construction lasted exactly 21 months: on September 11, 1933, the brand-new building was completed.

On September 29, 1956, road cycling World Champion Stan Ockers was mortally wounded after a crash on the slopes. This happened during his 116th performance at this track. He died a few days later.

On November 19, 1988, singer Roy Orbison gave his last performance before his death at the Sportpaleis, performing his single ‘You got it’ live for the first and only time.

The main building of the actual hall is 88 metres wide and 132 metres long and has an immense roof, spanning 11.600 m². Under the stands, there is a wooden cycling track of 250 meters long and 8 meters wide. When completed in 1933, the Sportpaleis was seen as a construction miracle.

The arena is built in an elliptical shape and has two floors. Both from the upper galleries and from the ground floor, there is a good visibility for the public. Various room configurations are possible, ensuring a perfect solution can be offered for the various needs of users.

In April 2010, works have begun to change the popular green color into blue.

Trivia

Artists who have performed at the arena include AC/DC, Christina Aguilera, Anastacia, Beyoncé, The Black Eyed Peas, Marco Borsato, James Brown, Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, Michael Bublé, Mariah Carey, Cher, Coldplay, The Cure, Deep Purple, Destiny’s Child, Neil Diamond, Céline Dion, En Vogue, Fiction Plane, Richard Fleeshman, Macy Gray, The Horrors, Whitney Houston, Elton John, Jonas Brothers, Grace Jones, K’s Choice, Alicia Keys, Lady Gaga, Lemar, Demi Lovato, Massive Attack, Paul McCartney, Metallica, George Michael, Mika, Milk Inc., Kylie Minogue, Muse, Pearl Jam, P!nk, Pink Floyd, Pitbull, The Police, Prince, Queen, Guns N’ Roses, Rammstein, Raygun, Razorlight, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rihanna, The Rolling Stones, Diana Ross, Shaggy, Shakira, Britney Spears, Spice Girls, Gwen Stefani, Donna Summer, Tiësto, Justin Timberlake, Toto, Tina Turner, Shania Twain, U2 and Roger Waters, among others.

Janet Jackson was scheduled to perform during her All for You Tour on November 29, 2001, but the show was cancelled, due to the September 11, 2001 attacks.

Many of them performed during the Night of the Proms, which is also held at the venue.

In 2007, Sportpaleis was voted the 10th best venue, by Billboard Magazine.

Audience

According to the classification of the American music magazine Billboard, the Sportpaleis was the second most visited event hall in the world in the period between November 2007 and November 2008, with 1,239,436 visitors. Only Madison Square Garden in New York had more visitors during this period.

The arena opened in 1933 and holds up to 18,500 people. It consists of 13,500 seats in the stands and also has a capacity for 1780 square center (seats) and the capacity to house a standing audience of 5,000. It is the current venue for the Proximus Diamond Games women’s tennis tournament.

Accessibility

The sports stadium is located at an exit of the Antwerp ring road. There is insufficient parking capacity for all visitors during an event. This regularly causes parking problems in the vicinity and traffic jams on the Antwerp ring road.

However, the Sportpaleis does have its own subway station (premetro station ‘Sport’). Both lines 3 and 6 stop at this station. Above ground, the sports stadium can be reached by Tram 12.

History

The idea of building a new arena in Prague came on the heels of the “golden era” of Czech ice hockey: winning 3 gold medals in a row. The arena was proposed to be built in time to host the 2003 World Championship tournament in ice hockey, but due to unforeseen complications with the investors, the ice hockey governing body had to switch that tournament to Finland. The arena’s main backer then became Sazka a.s., a Czech betting company.

The construction of the arena (which began in September 2002) was not without problems, but it finally finished in time to host the 2004 tournament.

In March 2008, the building was renamed O2 Arena.

September 24th, 2010 Zagreb, Croatia @ Zagreb Arena

Sorry not to have posted this yesterday.  Cause the show is gonna start soon.  But 2 shows in 2 days….Hard to follow.  lol

So tonight, Zagreb, Croatia!

Arena Zagreb is a multi-purpose sports hall located in the southwestern part of Zagreb, Croatia (in the Lanište neighborhood of Novi Zagreb). The site will also include a building complex, the Arena Complex (Arena Center), expected to be the largest shopping-entertainment center in the city.

The Croatian Government and the City Government of Zagreb held a public tender for the construction of a sports hall in order to host games in the 2009 World Men’s Handball Championship, and later for numerous other sporting, cultural and business events.

They selected the consortium composed of property developers TriGránit (from Hungary) and Ingra (from Croatia). The TriGránit/Ingra offer was initially approved on April 25, 2007, but the signing of the final contract was delayed because of Mayor Milan Bandić expressing discontent with the conditions. The Consortium engaged studio UPI-2M from Zagreb, specially for this project to create and produce a unique design for Arena Zagreb. The construction of the sports hall finally started on July 20, 2007, and was completed as planned, on December 15, 2008.

The Arena is used for hockey, futsal, handball, athletics, basketball, volleyball, numerous other sporting competitions and various concerts, exhibitions, fairs, conventions and congresses.

The shopping center and Arena Zagreb will share a series of services such as a joint parking lot, multiplex cinema, wellness center, numerous restaurants, cafes and stores.

Architecture

Resembling a giant rib cage around the building, 86 large pre-stressed, pre-fabricated concrete curved columns form the main façade, connected by a semi-translucent polycarbonate envelope that allows for various light effects. It’s one of the landmarks of Zagreb already, along with the cathedral.

Developing spatial and functional characteristics to enable maximum flexibility of the venue was vital during the schematic design stage. The telescopic system of 4,500 seats was a critical element in allowing different configurations and quick turnaround between events. The singular vision also led to provision of spacious facilities for athletes, other performers and event managers, a concept for simple and fluid visitor circulation, a mix of catering facilities and designing in smaller, mutually independent zones that could all be used at the same time. Getting the acoustics right was important too. The steel roof structure had sufficient bearing capacity to enable the suspension of additional stage equipment. The roof structure is close to the structure of a suspension bridge, which is an uncommon approach (in arena design) anywhere in the world. The roof ’s bearing structure is only 45 cm high, over a span of 110 m, because it is suspended from the upper side of the roof outside and can’t be seen from the interior. This solution was made feasible by contemporary cable production technology – the span is suspended on cables that have a diameter of just 66 mm. Each cable can carry 400 tons.

Arena Zagreb won the Structural Design of the Year award at the 2009 World Architecture Festival, and Grand spectacle award at Global BBR 2010

September 23rd, 2010 Belgrade, Serbia @ Beogradska Arena

Train rolls into Belgrade, Serbia for another great show tomorrow night.

History

In 1989, The City of Belgrade was chosen to host the Basketball World Championship of 1994. However, there was a condition for the city to build an all-new basketball arena. The city government immediately started a competition to find the best design of the new arena that was supposed to have a seat capacity of 20,000. The design submitted by Belgrade architect Vlada Slavica was chosen as the best.

In 1991 a location for the project was chosen – “Blok 25” in New Belgrade. However the project was already becoming problematic. There were only 3 years left to the World Championships and building this mega structure would have to be done in record time. A team of 126 companies was formed to be part of the arena committee. Two architects were chosen to design the arena’s roof.

In 1992 construction started as the arena committee formed a partnership with American company HOK that has had many experiences with building sporting objects. However, tough times were ahead. As the disintegration of Yugoslavia started, the United Nations imposed sanctions on the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (made up of the two remaining republics at the time – Serbia and Montenegro) and HOK stopped all co-operation with the arena committee. Even with this set back, work on the Belgrade Arena continued.

In 1993, Belgrade suffered one of its worst economic years in modern history. The Federal Republic of Yugoslavia experienced record inflation rates, and as a result of the sanctions and the conflicts in Yugoslavia, Belgrade lost the right to host the 1994 Basketball World Championships.

Following the formal announcement by FIBA, the arena’s construction still continued for some time, though at a considerably slower pace due to the lack of material. However, sometime in 1995 the construction completely stopped. Work on the arena re-commenced in 1998 as the city was chosen to host the World Table Tennis Championships in 1999 to be held in the Belgrade Arena. By this time the roof was already taking shape towards completion, part of the façade was done and the interior was half complete. Once again, Yugoslavia lost the privilege to host the competition as the city was bombed by NATO forces the year the competition was supposed to be held.

The first public event held in the Arena (which was still under construction at the time) was the final Slobodan Milošević (president of Yugoslavia at the time) 2000 presidential election campaign rally, which was held September 20, 2000. This was the last time Milošević has held a public speech. Two weeks later, he was ousted after mass protests across the country.

After a change of government in Yugoslavia in 2000 and the lifting of all sanctions imposed on the country, the Arena, under new management was completed in 2004 in time for the FIBA Diamond Ball tournament and Belgrade finally got the right to host The European Basketball Championship 2005.

Temporary licenses for public use expired in early 2006, following a series of sport events and concerts in 2005. Works on an automated fire prevention system and installation of elevators to meet European standards were completed by November 2006, while no events were held in the Arena in the meantime. The Belgrade Arena received its permanent public use license on November 4, 2006 and re-opened its doors as a result.

In February 2007, Serbian basketball coach Božidar Maljković started an initiative to name the Arena after another renowned Serbian basketball coach, Aleksandar Nikolić. Maljković presented his initiative to the city officials and the president of Serbia Boris Tadić, but the name change hasn’t been accepted yet.[8]

The Belgrade Arena has been given the honour to be the venue of the Eurovision Song Contest 2008 in May 2008. The Arena was host to the 2 semi-finals and the final as well as dress and performance rehearsals. As a result a new multimedia room with latest technology was opened in February 2008 in order to accommodate the technical team that would be in charge of the Eurovision broadcast.

Belgrade Arena is a member of the European Arenas Association (EAA).

Events

The first event held in the Belgrade Arena was a Socialist Party of Serbia and Yugoslav Left final election campaign rally, held September 20, 2000 before the 2000 elections in Yugoslavia. The construction of the Arena wasn’t finished at that time. The official opening came nearly four years later, July 31, 2004, when the FIBA Diamond Ball basketball tournament was held. Since Arena had only temporary license, only several events were held during the next two and a half years. The first event held after getting permanent license was the 50 Cent concert, on November 6, 2006.

One of the biggest events to take place in the Arena was the Eurovision Song Contest 2008. In the final night of the contest an audience of over 20,000 was present. Other big events held in the Arena include numerous sporting events, notably the European championships in basketball (EuroBasket 2005), volleyball (2005 Men’s European Volleyball Championship), table tennis (2007 European Table Tennis Championships), and judo (2007 European Judo Championships). The Belgrade Arena was also one of the 69 venues to take part in the 2009 Summer Universiade Games, hosting the opening and closing ceremonies, as well as the basketball competition. Arena was the host venue for the concerts of the most significant artists of Serbia and former Yugoslavia, as well as major international stars, including Iron Maiden, Queen + Paul Rodgers, Rammstein, Mark Knopfler, Phil Collins, Chris Rea, Lenny Kravitz, Rihanna, Nick Cave, Joe Cocker, Andrea Bocelli, The Pussycat Dolls, Alicia Keys, Il Divo, Jean Michel Jarre,Backstreet Boys,David Copperfield,Eros Ramazzotti and many others. The Arena also hosted the second Green Fest music festival with performances by Franz Ferdinand, Cypress Hill and The Raveonettes and many other concerts, political rallies, product exhibitions and numerous other events.

Also, in several international competitions, the record attendance has been set at the Arena. On February 2, 2009, the 2009 Fed Cup World Group II, Serbia vs. Japan tennis match set a record for an ITF event attendance with a crowd of 15,118 spectators. On March 5, 2009, the first Partizan Belgrade basketball game at Belgrade Arena was held, a 2008–09 Euroleague Top 16 match against Greek powerhouse Panathinaikos. A crowd of 22,567, a record for the Euroleague (and also for any basketball club game held indoors in Europe), saw Partizan win 63–56.On July 26, 2009, the FIVB World League final between Serbia and Brazil was held in Belgrade Arena, with an attendance of 22,680, which is a record of Belgrade Arena, and World League.

Upcoming events

In the future, Arena is set to host numerous concerts and sporting events, notably the 2011 Women’s European Volleyball Championship and 2012 European Men’s Handball Championship.

Location and influence

The Belgrade Arena is situated on E-70/E-75 highway, leading to Novi Sad and Budapest in the North, Zagreb in the West and Niš and Skopje in the South. The New Belgrade part of the highway bears the name Bulevar Arsenija Čarnojevića. Arena’s parking is limited in spaces, though nearby residential areas provide enough room for vehicles.

It takes a 15-minute drive from Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport to the Arena. Ride from downtown Belgrade would take the same amount of time, unless in rush-hour, when it could take up to 30 minutes to get to central Novi Beograd, where the Arena is located.

The construction of the Arena has caused a substantial increase in prices for apartments in the surrounding area, which are mostly new. A new modern business district is scheduled to be constructed across the Belgrade Arena. Hotel IN was the first new hotel to be built near the Arena however the venue is also within walking distance from Hyatt Regency Belgrade and Continental Hotel Belgrade.
